What are electric motorbikes?

Electric motorbikes are a form of two-wheeled transportation powered by electricity. Typical electric bikes contain a battery (the source of its power, typically lithium ion or lead acid), a motor (the source of its propulsion) and a controller (the interface between battery and motor).

Electric bikes come in many different forms and are designed for different purposes. Popular applications include commuting, last mile delivery, kids' bikes and off-road bikes.

What types of electric motorbike are there?

Much like traditional gas bikes, there are many different types of electric motorbikes, such as off-road, dual sport, learner legal, balance bikes, kids bikes and sport bikes.

What license do I need for an electric motorbike?

Licensing for electric motorbikes works much the same as licensing for petrol bikes, with ‘peak Watts’ acting as the replacement measurement to 'cc'.

How do I register an electric motorbike?

We will register all electric motorcycles purchased from us. There is typically a £55 fee to register a motorcycle on the road but this price is often factored into the cost of the bike. If you require more information on registering an electric motorcycle then please contact us. 

Are electric motorbikes street legal?

How much does it cost to tax an electric motorbike?

Electric motorcycle tax is free! However, you still need to go through the process of getting your bike tax on the bike regardless, even though it costs nothing to do. For more information visit the Gov website.

What are the main differences between electric motorbikes and petrol motorbikes?

The clear difference between petrol and electric motorbikes is the source of energy used to propel the bikes. As electric bikes use electricity, they are considered the environmentally-friendly choice.

Electric bikes are also easier to ride, easier to maintain and typically have no clutch or gears. 

Are electric bikes cheaper to run that standard petrol bikes?

Yes. Electric bikes use a cheaper and greener form of energy, are tax-free and are less costly to maintain - making them cheaper to run than standard petrol bikes.

What range can I expect on an electric motorbike?

Electric bike range is dependent on a number of factors. Manufacturers will often offer a range figure on their bike spec, but in our experience, this is best taken with a grain of salt.

Most manufacturer range tests are done in isolated and controlled conditions that do not accurately reflect real-life riding. Range can be affected by a number of external factors such as riding style, rider weight, road gradient and outside temperature.

You can get your electric motorbike repaired and serviced with Stag Motorcycles, wherever you are in the UK. We’re proud to offer nationwide service, and charge collections and returns at just 60p a mile.

Are electric motorbikes low maintenance?

Yes, electric motorbikes are considered lower maintenance than their petrol cousins. This is because electric motorcycles have fewer moving parts, and do not require things like filter changes or spark plugs.

Standard maintenance such as drive chain lubrication and brake fluid replacement is still required and it is important to keep up to date with servicing.

How much do electric motorbikes cost?

The price of an electric motorcycle will vary depending on the type of motorcycle you buy. Electric mopeds start at around £2,000. Street legal electric motorcycles start at around £3,000 and can go for over £30,000.

Off-road electric motorcycles range between £4500-£11,000. Kids electric motorcycles start at around £300 for balance bikes and can go for over £5,000 for small-wheel youth bikes. 

Are electric motorbikes suitable for kids?

Electric Motorcycles are fantastic options for kids. Electric bikes are easy to ride and make very little noise, therefore they are fantastic for new riders.
